Both beaches fly the Blue Flag, but they feel quite different underfoot and around you. Belek runs about 16km of pale sand backed by a broad belt of umbrella pine, eucalyptus and low dunes. The forest keeps hotels set back and screened from one another, so you get more space per guest, a genuine sense of seclusion and shaded walks behind the sand, along with beach bars, piers and cabanas at the smarter resorts. Lara's beach is shorter, around 8km of soft golden sand with the odd pebbly patch, and the hotels crowd right up to it in one continuous strip. That makes it livelier and more sociable by design, with everything close at hand, but with less of the private-estate hush you find in Belek. If your ideal is quiet and roomy, Belek wins comfortably; if you like a buzzy, well-serviced shore where the resort action is never far, Lara delivers exactly that.

Hotels: pine-forest estates vs landmark resorts

This is where the two areas show their personalities most clearly. Lara and neighbouring Kundu are famous for themed landmark resorts, the kind you photograph before you unpack. The Titanic Deluxe is shaped like a cruise ship, the WOW and PGS Kremlin Palace recreate Moscow's Red Square, and Delphin Imperial and Palace bring gold onion domes and hundreds of rooms apiece. They are big, bold and built to entertain, with restaurant counts that read like a food court. Belek takes a quieter, more understated line: large landscaped luxury estates spread through the pine forest, heavy on gardens, pools, spas and championship golf rather than spectacle. Getting to Antalya city and things to do

Lara's trump card is proximity to Antalya itself. The historic Kaleici old town is only about 10km away, a 20 to 25 minute taxi or roughly 45 minutes by bus, and the city's malls, marina and restaurants are all close. The Lower Duden Waterfalls, where a river drops some 40 metres straight off the cliff into the Mediterranean, sit around 2km from Lara beach and make an easy dolmus or taxi ride. Belek, by contrast, is deliberately self-contained; reaching the city means a planned 35 to 45 minute transfer, which we price at 40 euros by sedan, 50 by Vito and 65 by minivan. Where Belek pulls ahead is the eastern attractions: it is far closer to the Land of Legends theme park at Kadriye, the Roman theatre at Aspendos and the rafting rivers of Koprulu Canyon. City on the doorstep points firmly to Lara; big-ticket day trips favour Belek.

Belek is 33km and 35 to 45 minutes, at 25, 35 and 45 for the same three vehicles, with Kadriye matching Belek exactly. Golf, theme parks and excursions

For active holidays Belek holds the stronger hand. It is Turkey's golf capital, with around 15 championship courses threaded along a 17km strip of pine, which makes it the obvious base for a golf trip; Lara has none. Belek also sits close to the Land of Legends theme park at Kadriye, about 6km away, which we reach for 15 euros by sedan, 25 by Vito and 30 by minivan. Both areas are thoroughly family-friendly, but they suit different ages and temperaments. With a baby or young toddler, Lara often edges it: the transfer is shorter and gentler on a tired child, and having the city, pharmacies, waterfalls and restaurants close by makes the small logistics of family travel easier. Belek comes into its own for families who want room to roam. The resorts sit in large, green grounds with premium kids' clubs, generous pool complexes and quiet, so older children get space and parents get calm.
