Belek vs Side: Which Antalya Resort Is Right for You?

Belek and Side sit on the same stretch of Mediterranean coast east of Antalya, share the same warm sea and the same summer sun, yet they offer very different holidays. Belek is a purpose-built cluster of five-star golf resorts, close to the airport and quietly exclusive. Side wraps a lively pedestrian old town around genuine Roman ruins, further along the coast and far more public. This honest guide compares the two so you can book the right base.

Getting there: airport distance, time and transfer cost

The first practical difference is the road. Belek lies about 33km east of Antalya Airport, a 35 to 45 minute drive down the D400 coastal road with no tolls. Side sits further along the same road, roughly 64 to 65km out, which works out at around 60 to 75 minutes depending on traffic. Through July and August the coastal stretch can add fifteen minutes or so, so check locally in peak season.

That distance shows up in the fare. Our fixed transfer from the airport to a Belek hotel is 25 euros by sedan, 35 by Mercedes Vito and 45 by minivan. To Side the same vehicles are 45, 55 and 70 euros. In round terms a Side transfer costs about eighty per cent more and takes roughly twice as long as the Belek run. Beaches compared: sand, sea and atmosphere

Both resorts front the same clear Mediterranean, so the water itself is identical, but the sand and the atmosphere differ. Belek is known for fine golden sand, with a few sand-and-pebble patches, and several stretches fly the Blue Flag, including at Kadriye. Most of the beach here is hotel-private and carefully groomed, which makes it tranquil and spotless but also enclosed; you tend to stay within your resort's slice of shore.

Side is more open. It has two main beaches: the East Beach with soft golden sand, public access, beach clubs and bars, lively and popular with families and younger travellers, and the quieter West Beach for calmer days. Because Side's beaches are largely public and the old town is walkable, you can wander between sand, cafes and ruins on foot. In short, Belek offers a private, resort-style beach day, while Side offers a busier, more sociable and more walkable shoreline. Neither is objectively better; it depends on whether you prize seclusion or a little buzz.

Hotels and where you stay

Belek is Turkey's golf capital and its hotels reflect that. The resort is essentially a line of large five-star all-inclusive properties built from the 1990s onward, names like Maxx Royal, Regnum Carya, Gloria, Sueno and Rixos Premium, alongside the Land of Legends Kingdom hotel. These are polished, spacious, spa-heavy resorts designed for a self-contained stay, and there is little budget accommodation. You come to Belek to settle into one property and enjoy it. Around fifteen championship golf courses run along roughly 17km of coast here, playable year-round, which is the single biggest reason golfers choose Belek.

Side is different. It offers a far broader range, from budget pensions and mid-range hotels to five-star all-inclusive resorts on its outskirts, with many more independent and town-centre options. If you want choice, flexibility on price, or a base you can walk out of into shops and restaurants, Side's mix is wider. History, culture and day trips

This is where Side pulls clearly ahead. Side is an ancient city, settled in the 7th century BCE by colonists from Cyme, and its name means pomegranate in Greek. Its signature sight is the harbourside Temple of Apollo, whose five re-erected Corinthian columns are among the most photographed ruins on the coast. There is also a Roman theatre seating more than 15,000, an agora, Roman baths, colonnaded streets and a monumental gate, all wrapped inside a pedestrianised old town on a harbour peninsula.

Belek, by contrast, is a purpose-built resort with no old town of its own. Its cultural trump card is nearby: the superb Roman theatre at Aspendos, near Serik, one of the best preserved anywhere, which we reach for 50, 70 or 90 euros. From either base the day trips are similar. Land of Legends theme park is just 6km from Belek at 15, 25 and 30 euros, Manavgat and its waterfall lie close to Side, and longer runs to Koprulu Canyon at 80, 110 and 140 euros or Antalya's Kaleici are easy to arrange. For history on your doorstep, though, Side is unmatched.

Nightlife and evenings out

Evenings feel very different in the two resorts. Side has a genuine street scene: the pedestrianised old town on the harbour is lined with bars, restaurants, shops and a seafront promenade, and you can stroll from dinner to a drink to the water's edge without a taxi. This walkable buzz is a large part of Side's appeal, especially for couples, teens and younger travellers who want life outside the hotel gates.

Belek keeps its nightlife indoors. Because it is a resort zone rather than a town, the entertainment is hotel-based: in-resort bars, live music, animation teams and evening shows within the all-inclusive properties. It is comfortable, family-friendly and self-contained, but there is no old-town promenade to wander and little street life between resorts. If your ideal evening is exploring lit-up lanes and harbour cafes, Side delivers it; if you would rather have everything laid on inside a single luxury resort and not think about it, Belek suits you better. It is a real trade-off between buzz and convenience.

Which resort suits families

Both resorts are firmly family-friendly, but they suit different families. Belek is excellent for younger children: the transfer from the airport is short, the all-inclusive resorts are contained and safe with pools, kids' clubs and spas, and the huge Land of Legends theme park with its rides and aquapark sits just 6km away, a 15, 25 or 30 euro hop. For parents who want an easy, low-logistics week where almost everything is on site, Belek is hard to beat.

Side leans towards families who want to get out and explore, and towards teenagers and young travellers. The walkable old town, public beaches, ancient ruins and lively evenings give older children more to do beyond the hotel, and the wider range of accommodation helps if you are watching the budget. Younger families are perfectly happy in Side too, but they trade the very short Belek transfer for a longer arrival drive. As a rough rule, toddlers and a resort-contained stay point to Belek, while curious kids, teens and a taste for exploring point to Side.

Who should choose Belek, who should choose Side

Choose Belek if you are a golfer, a honeymooner, or a family with young children who wants the shortest transfer and a luxurious all-inclusive resort to settle into. It suits anyone chasing five-star comfort, a serious spa, Blue Flag calm and a contained holiday where the resort is the destination and day trips are optional extras. The trade-off is that there is no town to explore on foot and little life between the hotels.

Choose Side if you love history and culture, want a walkable town with real nightlife, prefer variety and flexibility on price, or simply dislike being stuck inside one resort. It works especially well for couples, teens and independent travellers who want ancient ruins, harbour bars and public beaches on their doorstep, and who do not mind a longer, slightly pricier transfer from the airport.
