🏛 The experience

Fire of Anatolia is Turkey's best-known dance production, a cast of 120 performers compressing thousands of years of Anatolian history into one evening of movement. Sufi whirling gives way to village halay and then to the fast footwork of Caucasian lezginka, set to a driving score and lighting that fills the arena. The show holds two Guinness World Records, one for 241 movements a minute and one for the largest live audience, more than 400,000 people. It suits couples, families with children who can sit through two hours, and anyone wanting a night out away from the hotel buffet. There is no dialogue, so no Turkish is needed.

Your driver collects you from the hotel in the early evening; the exact time depends on where you are staying and is confirmed on WhatsApp beforehand. The arena stands beside the ancient theatre of Aspendos, 9 km from Serik and roughly 22 to 23 km from Bogazkent and Kadriye, so the drive is short. Inside, you are shown to seats near the centre of the stage. The performance runs about two hours in two halves, with an intermission long enough to buy a drink and photograph the arena under the lights. After the final bow the driver takes you back, arriving at the hotel around 23:00.

The show plays on Tuesday and Friday evenings, which makes it easy to fit around a beach day. Gloria Aspendos Arena is open to the sky, and even in high summer the temperature drops once the sun has gone, so bring a jumper or light jacket; in May, September and October a scarf is welcome too. Children aged 4 to 11 pay £25 and infants under 4 go free, although two hours of loud music and bright lights is a lot for very small ones. Eat before you leave, since dinner is not part of the package and only drinks are on sale. Be at reception a few minutes early.
